M2 L1 Exercise

Exercise: Module 2, Lesson 1 - From Weak Signal to Plausible Future

Objective: To practice the core skills of a foresight practitioner: identifying "weak signals" in the present and using them to construct a coherent, plausible future scenario.

Your Task

  1. Select a Broad Trend: Choose one of the following broad, ongoing trends:

    • Remote Work & Distributed Teams
    • The Creator Economy
    • AI in Healthcare
    • Sustainable & Ethical Consumption
  2. Identify Weak Signals: Conduct a brief web search to find 3-5 "weak signals" related to your chosen trend. A weak signal is a small, niche, or emerging development that is not yet mainstream but hints at a potential future direction. Look for new startups, niche community behaviors, recent research papers, or unusual news stories.

    • Example for "Remote Work": A weak signal could be the rise of "digital nomad villages" in specific countries, or new startups offering "metaverse-based virtual offices."
  3. Project a Plausible Future: Write a short narrative (one to two paragraphs) describing a plausible future in the year 2030 where your identified weak signals have converged and become mainstream.

    • Your scenario should not be a wild prediction, but a logical extension of the signals you found.
    • Describe what this future looks like. What has changed? What are the second-order consequences (i.e., the effects of the effects)?

Deliverable

Write a short (300-500 word) analysis in a Markdown file. Structure your analysis with the following headings:

  • Chosen Trend: [Your Chosen Trend]
  • Weak Signals Identified:
    • Signal 1: [Description and source/link if available]
    • Signal 2: [Description and source/link if available]
    • Signal 3: [Description and source/link if available]
  • Plausible Future Scenario (2030): [Your narrative describing the future scenario]

Example Submission Snippet:

Chosen Trend: The Creator Economy

Weak Signals Identified:

  • Signal 1: The emergence of "Vtubers" (virtual YouTubers) who use digital avatars instead of their real faces, gaining massive followings.
  • Signal 2: Startups creating platforms for AI-powered "virtual influencers" that are entirely fictional characters with their own storylines and brand deals.
  • Signal 3: Musicians releasing new music as limited-edition NFTs that grant holders access to special communities and events.

Plausible Future Scenario (2030):

In 2030, the line between creator and intellectual property has almost completely blurred. A significant portion of the most popular online personalities are not individual humans, but "synthetic celebrity" franchises managed by teams of writers, designers, and community managers. These AI-driven characters have dynamic, ongoing narratives that play out across multiple platforms, and fans can directly influence their storylines by purchasing NFTs that act as voting shares. This has led to the decline of the traditional "influencer" and the rise of the "narrative director." The biggest entertainment companies are no longer just movie studios, but character agencies that manage portfolios of these synthetic stars, creating a new form of interactive, decentralized entertainment.
